Dolly Parton: Country Music Legend, Hollywood Star and Beloved Philanthr

September 25, 2026
Dolly Parton was an internationally celebrated American singer, songwriter, actress and philanthropist whose remarkable career spanned nearly seven decades. Born January 19, 1946, in Locust Ridge, Tennessee, she grew up in a poor but musical family in the Smoky Mountains, where she began writing songs as a child. Her distinctive voice, songwriting talent, quick wit and signature rhinestone fashion helped her become one of the most recognizable entertainers in the world. Parton died on August 25, 2026, at age 80, leaving behind an extraordinary musical and humanitarian legacy.

Parton wrote thousands of songs and became famous for classics including “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors” and “I Will Always Love You,” which later became a global hit for Whitney Houston. She also crossed successfully into Hollywood, starring in the hit comedy 9 to 5 (1980) alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, and Steel Magnolias (1989). In 1986, she opened Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, helping turn her Appalachian roots into a major tourism destination. Her influence reached far beyond entertainment through the Dollywood Foundation’s Imagination Library, which provides free books to children and has distributed hundreds of millions of books worldwide.

Despite her extraordinary fame, Parton frequently spoke affectionately about her humble upbringing and remained closely connected to her Tennessee roots. She was widely admired for her generosity, humor and ability to connect with people across generations. Her charitable work included supporting childhood literacy, disaster relief and medical research, including a $1 million donation toward COVID-19 vaccine research. Her legacy continues through her music, business ventures, charitable initiatives and the generations of artists she inspired.

Achievements: Wrote and recorded iconic songs including “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You,” starred in the hit film 9 to 5 (1980), founded the Imagination Library literacy program, inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame (1999) and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (2022).

Birth: January 19, 1946 — Locust Ridge, Tennessee.

Profession: Singer, songwriter, actress, entrepreneur and philanthropist.

Interesting facts: Parton was one of 12 children, wrote “I Will Always Love You” before Whitney Houston made it an international smash, famously insured her ample bust for publicity purposes, and helped inspire the name of the cloned sheep Dolly because the sheep was created from a mammary-gland cell.
