Charlie Munger: Berkshire Hathaway Vice Chairman and Warren Buffett's Pa

November 28, 2023

Charlie Munger was an American investor, lawyer and businessman, the longtime vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway and Warren Buffett's closest partner. Born on January 1, 1924, in Omaha, Nebraska, he served in the Army Air Forces in World War II and graduated from Harvard Law School.

Munger founded the law firm Munger, Tolles & Olson in 1962 and an investment partnership that earned strong returns. He joined Berkshire Hathaway as vice chairman in 1978 and worked with Buffett until his death. He chaired Wesco Financial from 1984 to 2011 and Daily Journal Corporation, and served on the board of Costco.

Munger was known for his "latticework of mental models" approach to investing and decision-making and for his blunt wit. He was a major philanthropist, giving large gifts to the University of Michigan, Stanford and UC Santa Barbara. He had seven children; his son Teddy died of leukemia at age nine. He lost an eye after cataract surgery complications. He died in a hospital in Santa Barbara, California, on November 28, 2023, at age 99, and Forbes estimated his net worth at about $2.6 billion.
