Al Hirschfeld: Legendary Caricaturist of Broadway Dies at 99

January 20, 2003

Al Hirschfeld was an American caricaturist, famous for his black-and-white ink drawings of celebrities and Broadway stars. Born on June 21, 1903, in St. Louis, Missouri, he drew for The New York Times for more than seven decades.

He also designed movie posters, including The Wizard of Oz, and magazine covers, and drew a 1987 series of comedian stamps for the U.S. Postal Service. He received two special Tony Awards and the National Medal of Arts in 2002.

Hirschfeld was married three times, most recently to Louise Kerz. He hid the name of his daughter, Nina, in most of his drawings, which led fans to hunt for it. He died at his home in New York City on January 20, 2003, at age 99. The Martin Beck Theatre was renamed the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.

Achievements: Two special Tony Awards, National Medal of Arts (2002), seven decades with The New York Times.

Birth: June 21, 1903 - St. Louis, Missouri.

Profession: Caricaturist and artist.

Interesting Facts: Many of his drawings carry a number next to his signature showing how many times "NINA" is hidden.
